Moody Gardens New Aquarium Update

Moody Gardens New Aquarium Update

The aquarium at Moody Gardens has been under renovation for the past year and my family and I have been very anxious for it to reopen! It is set to reopen to the public on May 27th. So imagine my surprise when I received a members only email letting me know that I can visit from May 8th-24th for a "soft opening"! The email pointed out that there is still construction going on and not all new attractions are open, but this was exclusively for members for being so patient during the renovations. Woohoo!!

I was there on May 8th at 10am! I wanted to get great pics and videos for y'all and planned on going live so you could experience all the new exhibits with me! Thinking since only members were allowed in, this should be easy! Not so much. There were at least 10 school field trips there and the place was total chaos. (More on this later). I was able to get some pics and made at least one lap so I could see the changes! Here is what you can look forward to:

A new aquarium that runs from top to bottom! The kids noticed this first!

Then there are two new touch tanks! Here is a photo of one of them below. The other one looks very similar. They will house sting rays and other marine life!

There is a small climbing structure resembling trees and vines behind one of the touch tanks. The kids really seemed to enjoy this!

Everyone loved the new penguins! They were super cute and very active! They were certainly fun to watch!

There is also a new pirate ship inside the walk through tanks with the sharks. I didn't get a good picture of it, but it looks really cool!

I know they are working on a jellyfish exhibit as well, which was not open yet when I was there. There was actually still a lot of construction going on, so I can't wait to see it all finished! There were new floors too! Much better than the carpet that was there before! I'm so anxious for the final reveal!

What discouraged me a bit was the miscommunication on the soft opening! A fellow mama I was with was able to find an employee to give us an explanation. Apparently, the soft opening is not for members, but for school groups. Since it would be open, they decided to just go ahead and let members come as well. This was not communicated in the email. If it was, I would have simply came later when the school groups have left for the day. I'm happy the school groups get to come and the kids get to experience the new aquarium!! :-) So just keep in mind if you are member, that mornings are simply too chaotic to really get a good look at everything. I apologize for the long explanation of why I only have pics for you and no videos, but I think it needed explained in more detail.

All in all, I'm very happy with the changes so far in the aquarium and can't wait to see it fully completed! Only one week to go!! It will be awesome to get out of the heat and humidity of the summer to hang with some penguins and stingrays. Kudos Moody Gardens!

Galveston Splash Pads & Pools

Galveston has lots of great beaches to cool off in, but sometimes the beach just isn't your thing (or your kids thing). A great alternative is to hit up a splash pad or pool! Lists are in alphabetical order.

Galveston Splash Pads

Free Splash Pads
Menard Park
Photo from City of Galveston

Menard Park
Menard Park is located behind the McGuire-Dent Recreation Center at 28th & Seawall. It is a nice little splash pad! It's right across from the beach, a good way to rinse your sandy feet! Go on Thursday afternoon when you can browse Galveston's Own Farmers Market, then let the kiddos play on the playground and splash pad. The Farmers Market is from 3-7pm.

Schreiber Park
Schreiber Park
Schreiber Park or "Rocket Ship" Park is a newer park in Galveston. It replaced the old Castle Park. One great addition to this park is the splash pad! It has a lot of water that squirts from the ground vs. above so it's a good one for the younger crowd.  For a full review on Schreiber Park click HERE! Schreiber Park is located beside Oppe Elementary off of 83rd Street.

Wright Cuney Park
Wright Cuney
Photo from City of Galveston
This splash pad is located at the Wright Cuney Recreation Center. It is similar to the splash pad at Menard Park. I've never actually been to this splash pad, but it seems like this one is a little less known. You might find it less crowded than the others for this reason. It is located at 718 41st Street.

Pay Splash Pads
Both of these are located inside Galveston's two waterparks: Palm Beach and Schlitterbahn.

Palm Beach
Palm Beach is Moody Gardens waterpark. It's a great little waterpark that is not too big or too small. They have a splash pad that is in it's own little area, though still part of the waterpark. As soon as you walk in to Palm Beach, turn right and follow the little path down to the splash pad. It has a shaded area to sit and watch the kiddos play.

Schlitterbahn
Schlitterbahn has a few kid areas that offer zero entry and double as a splash pad along with the play area. Schlitterbahn is larger and more expensive than Palm Beach, but you can often find coupons for discounted admission!

Galveston Pools
Galveston actually has a few pools that are open to the public for a fee. And VERY soon we will have a city pool!! It's being built right now!

City of Galveston Public Pool at Lasker Park
The city of Galveston is in the process of building a public pool. Construction is moving along as I type and they hope to have it open for this summer!! I'm not sure on pricing or fees yet. It should be an amazing pool!

City of Jamaica Beach Pool
If you drive down to the west end of the island you will get to Jamaica Beach. They actually have  a nice city pool that you can swim in for a small fee. This is a great way to get away from the hustle and bustle of Galveston and have a pool day!

Jungle Cafe
(Jones Drive)
Bryants Jungle Cafe is actually a restaurant with a pool! If you are a paying customer of the restaurant, you are welcome to swim in the pool. Pretty neat, right!? AND - kids eat FREE on Friday nights!! They have a big menu, so there is bound to be something your kiddo will like. :-)

Nick's Kitchen & Beach Bar
(Seawall)
So technically the pool is attached to the bar, but it opens at 11am and Nick's is a family friendly restaurant, so I'm putting it on here! Go for lunch then grab a drink while you watch the kids splash around in the pool. There may be a cover charge for kids, so check before hopping in.

Is there a splash pad or pool on the island that I missed? Please let me know so I can keep everyone informed!!
