Happy May y'all!! On the island, that means summer is pretty much here - haha! This Thursday is your last chance for Paws to Read until the summer program. If you have been wanting to check it out, make it this week! On Saturday, the kiddos can build a pot to give to mom for Mother's Day at Home Depot! Or stop in at Clay Cup Studios for Mother's Day gift making day! For Star Wars fans, Movie Nite on the Strand will be showing Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Lemonade Day is on Sunday, so make sure to stop at one of the stands around town to support the young entrepreneurs. It should be a fun week!

       *Get a fresh start to the day and set sail on the Galveston Sea Scout Base's schooner boat during "Schooner Sundays." The massive sailing beauty leaves Offats Bayou just after noon each Sunday and sails out to destinations beyond Galveston causeway. A licensed captain and “spot tracker” is aboard the ship, so you can sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. *Check with website for cost involved*
       M/V Baysmart Express Public Cruise 12:30-4pm (Every Saturday)
       *Looking for something FUN? Hop aboard the M/V Baysmart Express for a 3 hour informative and scenic tour! Watch the pelicans soar over Offatts Bayou as you head into the Intercostal Waterway and pass under the Galveston Causeway Bridge. Be awed at the marine cargo vessels maneuvering in the Galveston and Houston Ship Channels. Dolphins surfacing are always exciting! Departing from and returning to the Sea Scout Base Galveston. Boarding at 12:30 - Departing at 1:00pm. Overflow parking with shuttle service available. Adults: $30 | Kids (Under 12): $20 | Kids 5 and Under: Free SSB Calendar

It was a nice weekend here on the island! I hope you were able to check out some of the fun events happening! This week is no exception! Wednesday is the 20th Anniversary Open House at Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig and Museum. Admission will be free! On Saturday, you can check out Youth Birding Classic at Galveston Island State Park, Princess Day at Stewart Beach, and Pet-A-Palooza Downtown! It should be a great weekend! :-)

In Galveston Island Kids news, I plan on adding any local Facebook events on my Facebook page to help you keep track of events that way as well. But please make sure you are checking the rundown or monthly calendar for all events! A lot that happen do not have a Facebook event created for them. Also, if you are viewing Facebook on your desktop, the monthly calendar is available right below the home tab on my Facebook page! It does not work on mobile unfortunately. 
I'm working on a splash pad and area pool list. Please send me any pools that you know in the area that are open to the public, for a fee or free!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter Sunday for those who celebrate! If you haven't checked out the Tall Ship El Galéon, it's on dock at the Texas Seaport Museum. It makes for some great pictures! Tuesday is the SMART Family Literacy Party at The Spot and Thursday is Homeschool Day at Pleasure Pier. On Saturday, there are Earth Day activities at Moody Gardens and Galveston Children's Museum. Artwalk is on Saturday evening and always makes for a fun time. Head on out to the Texas Seaport Museum on Sunday for free day!! Have a great week! :-)
In Galveston Island Kids news, I have giveaway winners!!! Thanks for all who entered and participated! I had fun and I hope to have more in the future. Galveston Island Summer Camps 2017

Here are your Summer Camps happening in Galveston - Summer 2017! Make sure you click on the links to get more information on each camp, including weeks available and cost. Island Summer Camps

Artist Boat
       Eco-Art Summer Camp (Jun -Aug)
       *Art meets science in the Artist Boat 2017 Eco-Art Summer Camp program sessions! Artist Boat Eco-Art Campers will experience true science and art enrichment with the creation of Eco-Art to beautify yards and homes. Three session themes are offered in which campers will use the scientific method to investigate processes in our ocean. Each camp will culminate in creating works of art that illustrate the knowledge that campers have acquired about our ocean. Camp sessions are designed for children Kindergarten – Sixth Grade.

Bryan Museum
       History Camp (Jun -Aug)
       *The Bryan Museum is offering a cool new camp this summer! Hosted by The Bryan Museum and the iWRITE Literacy Organization, History Camp at The Bryan Museum is a five-day historical fiction-writing camp for incoming 4th-6th grade students. Campers will experience hands-on inspiration from the Wild West and Texas history. Each day they will receive creative writing instruction from children's author Melissa Williams, combined with exciting activities from the Museum's history experts, which they will use to create their own fictional short stories. Campers will even have a chance to enter their stories for publication in the I Write Short Stories by Kids for Kids Writing Contest presented by iWRITE!

The Children's Center, Inc (TCC)
       Summer Youth Program (Jun -Aug)
       *TCC is offering a summer program at The Boys and Girls Club of Galveston. Breakfast and lunch will be provided and there will be lots of activities. The program is free for children that live in the 77550 zip code. It is for children age 6-17.

City of Galveston
       City of Galveston Summer Recreation Program (Jun -Aug)
       *The Galveston Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of youth programs and activities each summer.  They are held at McGuire Dent Recreation Center and Wright Cuney Recreation Center. Stay tuned for more information on what they are offering this summer.

Clay Cup Studios
       Summer Camp (Select weeks Jun-Aug)
       *Camp at Clay Cup is full of games, art and fun. Each camp week will be a different theme this year. So your child can do one or all. Each day we will work with a different art medium including but not limited to Glass Fusion, Plaster, Canvas, Ceramics, Watercolors, Mixed Media, Wood Working, Screen Printing and Paint War! Camp includes all materials for your child's project, snacks and drinks.

DLS Dance Studio 
       Summer Dance Camp (Jun)
       *DLS Dance Studio will be offering a summer dance camp! AGES: 5-16, $150/WEEK (Includes snack & water)​. The studio can be reached at (409)750-7023 or by email at dlsdancestudio@gmail.com.

East End Theater Company (ETC) 
       Students on Stage (Jun 6-25)
       *ETC is proud to provide the youth of Galveston County with Students on Stage classes in the performing arts. The session culminates in a live public performances of a show at the end of the session. Students are instructed in the principles of acting, singing, dance, improvisation, costume & set design, and auditioning by highly-qualified faculty and guest artists. Fanfare Lutheran Music Academy
       SUMMER OF FUN WITH THE ARTS! (Jun-Jul)
      *The Lutheran Music Academy has all kinds of great summer camps! Get exposure to a variety of musical experiences with guitar, violin, piano, voice/choir, drums/percussion, as well as art and drama! Their excellent, experienced instructors will offer a full array of classes, (including a mid-morning/afternoon snack). They also offer Fanfare Jr, a music and movement camp for 2-5 year olds. If you pay by May 19 then you will get a nice discount!

First Baptist Church
       Vacation Bible School (Jun-Jul)
      *Vacation Bible School at First Baptist is a fun learning environment. It is great for kids kindergarten age through fifth grade.

Fishing Galveston Texas - Halls Landing
        Fishing Camp (Jun-Aug, Select Dates)
       *This summer camp teaches all of the basics of fishing. From knot tying, how to properly bait a hook, casting, and battling a fish on a rod and reel, to even how to throw a cast net and catch your own live bait. Your child will learn from a Licensed US Coast Guard Captain and Professional Galveston Bay Fishing Guide. There are one to two hours of hands-on teaching at the dock, then everyone will board the boats, and take off to the hot fishing spots to catch redfish, speckled trout, flounder and many other saltwater species. If you would like to enroll your child for a Galveston Summer Fishing Camp, or have questions - call 409-739-8526 or email greg@fishinggalvestontx.com. Prices for each one day camp is $165 per child. Kids can enroll in more than one camp date. Times are from 8am to 2pm. Ages 7 to 14. Each child will provide their own lunch and snacks. Deposit of $100 will reserve your childs spot, remaining balance due day of camp.

Galveston Arts Center
        Art Camp (Jun-Jul)
       *The Galveston Arts Center is offering morning classes throughout the summer as well as one week summer camps! All Camps meet 5 days (Monday through Friday) from 1-4pm. Enrollment fee: $150.

Galveston Arts League
        Art Camp (Jun)
       *Galveston Arts League is offering morning classes throughout June. Cost is $10.00 per day or $30 if you sign up for all four classes. For further information contact Galveston Art League.

Galveston Ballet 
       Fairy Tale Camp (Jul-Aug)
       *The Galveston Ballet is offering their Fairy Tale Camp again this year! 5-day Workshops, include 3 full hours of themed dancing, acting, arts & crafts w/snacks provided. *Designed for children Age 3-6.

Galveston Children's Museum
        Summer Camp (Jun-Aug)
       *Galveston Children’s Museum’s summer camps offer science and engineering topics in an atmosphere of inquiry. Each session presents activities designed to actively engage children and promote wonder, questions, and critical thinking. Our camps are not intended to stop at the end of the session but hopefully will continue to spark continued interest and in the best case scenario lead to heightening curiosity about our wonderful world. We hope you will join us on our new adventures.

Galveston College
        Kids College (Jun-Aug)
        *Galveston College offers all kinds of classes throughout the summer for ages 8-14. Classes range from Minecraft Designers to Design Your Own 3D Video Game!

Galveston Island Beach Patrol
      Junior Lifeguard Camp (Select Dates Jun-Jul)
       *Youths between the ages of 10 and 15 can in the Galveston Island Beach Patrol Junior Lifeguard Day Camp Program. To participate, youths should have an interest in the beach environment, must be able to swim two laps (100 meters) without stopping, and be able to tread water for five to seven minutes depending on their age category. This camp is also a great first step for those youths who are interested in eventually becoming Galveston Island Beach Patrol Lifeguards.  Cost of Camp: $325/*$80 *Scholarship available for those who qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Geo's Texas Tumblers
      Gymnastics Camp (Call for dates)
       *Geo's is offering full day camps and half day camps (morning and afternoon) for those interested. Ages 5-18. Contact the gym for more information.

Grand 1894 Opera House
      Grand Theatre Camp (Jul 24-28)
       *If you love to perform for family and friends – this is the camp for you! Led by actors/directors from Missoula Children’s Theatre as well as The Grand’s camp staff, camp will consist of daily rehearsals and direction on acting, singing and technical theatre, as well as theatre crafts and performance instruction. Summer Theatre Camp is a week-long residency program presented by Missoula Children’s Theatre and will culminate in a full performance of PETER AND WENDY on Friday, July 28th at 6pm on The Grand’s stage.The Grand and Camp session is July 24-July 28, 2017 with classes from 12:30pm – 5:30pm each day, and the final performance at 6pm on Friday, July 28th. Family and friends are invited to attend the final performance. Campers must commit to attending all camp sessions and participating in the final performance on Friday evening. *Students must be between the ages of 7-16 by July 15, 2017. Camp session is $245 per person. Camp size is limited and reservation and first deposit must be made by May 1, 2017.

Kitchen Chick
        Cooking Summer Camp (Jun-Jul)
       *Do you have a little one that loves to cook!? Sign them up for cooking summer camp at The Kitchen Chick! From learning Tex Mex to how to bake - there is a variety of classes to choose from! The camps are for ages 7-14. Each camp is 4 days in length, held 1PM-4:30PM, limited to 12 students and led by dynamic duo of certified teachers. The Kitchen Chick will provide aprons for each child to wear and all supplies and tools.  Children can register for any number of weeks during the summer – pick one or two weeks, or sign up for all seven! The cost for each one-week (4-Day: Monday, Wednesday-Friday) session is $300 per camper. The Kitchen Chick offers a $25 discount when enrolling a sibling in the same session. Payment due in full at time of registration!

Moody Gardens

       Preschool Camp (Select Saturdays Feb-Aug)
       *Join Moody Gardens as your lil' will learn through story time, make a craft, have a themed snack, and visit one of the Pyramids at Moody Gardens. Preschool camps are designed for campers 3-4 years of age, accompanied by one adult. Non-members: $20 per day Members: $17 per day. Reservations and pre-payment are required for all programs.
       Day Camps (Select Weeks Jun-Aug)
       *Each day, campers will have loads of fun investigating and discovering how animals live in the wild. Camp activities will reflect what they learned about the day’s topic making their summer experience fun, educational, and unforgettable. Day camps are tailored to two age groups, 5-6 years and 7-9 years, to best accommodate learning and development. Each age group will get to experience a unique camp. Non-members Half Day: $40 per day, $160 all week. Non-members Full Day: $60 per day, $250 all week.
       Junior Keeper Camp (Select Tuesdays Jul 11th or Aug 1st)
       *Join us to find out what skills are needed to be animal keepers at Moody Gardens during our Jr. Keeper Camp. Campers will learn about animal behaviors and enrichment, practice their observation skills, and make enrichment devices through hands-on activities and games. This camp includes an animal presentation and tours of the Rainforest and Aquarium Pyramids. We will only be offering this camp twice in the summer, so hurry and register before spots fill up!
 Ages 10-11. Cost: $75 per day.
       Keeper For A Day Camp (Select Thursdays Jun-Aug)
       *Work alongside the biologists as you experience firsthand what it’s like to be an animal keeper at Moody Gardens during our Keeper for a Day Camp. Campers will explore animal training, enrichment, exhibit requirements, and help us prepare food diets for the animals in the Rainforest and Aquarium Pyramids. We will only be offering this camp twice in the summer, so hurry and register before spots fill up! Ages 12-13. Cost: $75 per day.

Moody Gardens Golf Course 
       Junior Golf Summer Camp (Select Weeks Jun, Jul & Aug)
       *Instruction includes swing basics for putting, chipping, the full swing, introduction and review of rules & etiquette, and lots of fun-based golf learning games. For ages 6-14. Ohana Surf & Skate 
       Surf Camp (Select dates Jun-Aug)
       *Learn to surf or improve your surfing skills presented by Ohana Surf Camps. Ohana has over 11 years of camp experience on Galveston Island teaching kids how to enjoy surfing and offer lessons everyday of the week. Your child will be met each morning at 9:00 a.m. by their own Ohana Surf Camp instructor on the beach between 28th & 29th St. on Seawall Blvd. (weekdays) or West Beach / Hershey Beach (weekends). These are excellent sites with good waves, sandy bottoms, and safe environments for learning to surf. As required, our instructors are Open Water Safety Certified, as well as camp being monitored by the Galveston Beach Patrol Lifeguards which are on duty at the 27th and 29th street jetties from 9:00 a.m. until the end of the day. Surf Camp hours are 9:00 am till 12:00 noon daily through the summer season.  Ages 6-17. Prices vary depending on activity and length.

PIRATES! Legends of the Gulf Coast
        Pirate Camp (Select Dates Jun-Jul)
       *PIRATE CAMP is the best fun a kid who loves pirates can have. Spend the day with pirates - it's educational! They do role playing, arts & crafts, games and fun. Each camper will receive a hat, a foam sword (learn sword fighting skills during our role playing fun), and a certificate issued by
Pirates! Legends of the Gulf Coast certifying their allegiance to the band of pirates. Camp begins promptly at 10 AM each day and ends at approximately 1:45 PM. $60 per child payment required at registration. All campers must bring a bag lunch and drink. This is a co-ed camp for 6-10 year olds. Limited to 10 children per day. Please complete all forms and submit, or you can download and print- email them, drop off or snail mail.  You MUST PRE-REGISTER at least 2 days in advance.  

Sea Scout Base Galveston
       REACH Camp (Jul 10-15, 17-22)
      *Designed for students 13 to 17 years of age, this six day five-night camp includes on the water actives such as sailing, swimming, and kayaking. Our summer reach program is packed full of knowledge and fun. The Reach program utilizes sailing as an educational platform, challenging youth to embrace education, establish a love of learning and explore productive Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) based careers. Combining educators, sailing instructors, engineers, scientists with today’s youth to provide them with a one of a kind authentic learning experience, giving students the opportunity to apply classroom learning in a cooperative work environment. Time: 8-5 pm  Cost: $750 

Texas A&M Galveston 
       Sea Camp Adventures  (Jun, Jul, Aug)
       *Texas A&M Galveston has lots of different sea camps to choose from! From Marine Biology to Fishing Camp to trips to Costa Rica - they have a little bit of everything! They are filling up quickly so if you are interested - act fast! Ages 10-18

Texas Surf Camps
       Texas Surf Camp (Jun -Aug)
       *Texas Surf Camps primary focus is on surfing instruction and practice. It is their goal to provide each camper with the confidence and knowledge to continue the great sport of surfing on his or her own after camp is over. They also teach ocean education and awareness through fun, hands-on games and activities and presentations from organizations such as Surfrider Foundation. Requirements: MUST HAVE basic swimming skills and be comfortable in the ocean (One-on-one private lessons are available for non-swimmers). Age 6 & Up (as of June 1, 2017) (Private Lesson only for under age 6) No Surfing Experience required! (Except for advanced camps). Surfers are divided into groups based on age. Camp Rates (Mon-Fri) $325 per 5-day session, $75 per day for less than one full week.

What a gorgeous weekend we had on the island! This week is shaping up to be a fun week! This Wednesday is the last story time of the spring season. I think Rosenberg Library is going to make it extra fun! The Easter Bunny will be making an appearance at The Galveston Children's Museum for Family Free Night on Thursday! Saturday has more Easter happenings with some egg hunts going on around the island and an Easter Bunny visit at Clay Cup Studios. It's also Beach and Bay Day at Galveston Island State Park! On Easter Sunday there are more egg hunts including the big Moody Gardens one! Check the Easter Egg Hunt List for a complete run down of all the hunts! Happy hunting!

       *Get a fresh start to the day and set sail on the Galveston Sea Scout Base's schooner boat during "Schooner Sundays." The massive sailing beauty leaves Offats Bayou just after noon each Sunday and sails out to destinations beyond Galveston causeway.        *Looking for something FUN? Hop aboard the M/V Baysmart Express for a 3 hour informative and scenic tour! Watch the pelicans soar over Offatts Bayou as you head into the Intercostal Waterway and pass under the Galveston Causeway Bridge. Be awed at the marine cargo vessels maneuvering in the Galveston and Houston Ship Channels. Dolphins surfacing are always exciting! Departing from and returning to the Sea Scout Base Galveston.
